When I first got around to republishing the Anglo-Indian
Cookery Book along with Swallow Press of Kolkata, I was excited in thinking
that it was the first truly Anglo-Indian recipe book to have come out of Calcutta
and perhaps India. Maybe it is because judging by the style and language, it reflects
a linguistic tone and usage of English typical of Anglo speak. Be that as it
may, the Anglo-Indian Cookery Book first published by Catholic Orphan Press in
1900 was not the first cookbook to have been in circulation showcasing Anglo-Indian
dishes.
There have been so many more before it hidden now in archives around the world and unavailable in point. Most of these were written by English Memsahibs excited about the new style of cooking that they would ultimately take back to England with them which is why on many titles pre-1900, you will find this phrase: Written by a 25 years resident or 35 years resident implying an English woman or man having resided in India for that many years.
That being said, there have been some excellent Anglo Indian
cookery books to have been written by English women in India like The Anglo Indianand Oriental Cookery Book by Grace Johnson-1891 or Anglo Indian CookeryAt Home by Henrietta Hervey-1895 and by far one of the best cookery books
to have come out of India, The Indian Cookery Book, published by Thacker, Spink & CO -1880.
Bringing you another lovely little book surprisingly published in Calcutta by W. Newman & CO in 1879. This is a quaint little book of Anglo-Indian recipes that was actually published in Urdu so that cooks could read and follow the recipes. If this was indeed the trend of those days, it explains why so many cooks in Calcutta and other parts of India were well acquainted with English dishes too. Without further ado, here is the PDF of the book DAINTY DISHES FOR INDIAN TABLES published by W. Newman and Company publishers of Dalhousie, Calcutta in 1893. The book was printed at the Caxton Press, 1 Mission Row , Calcutta.
